How Often Should You Really Visit the Dentist?

Most people think twice a year is enough — but the right frequency depends on your oral health status. Find out what schedule is best for you.

The "twice a year" rule is widely quoted — but it originated as a marketing slogan by a toothpaste brand in the 1950s, not clinical guidance. Modern evidence supports a personalised approach based on your individual risk profile.

Low-risk patients: every 12 months

Adults with no history of gum disease, no current cavities, excellent oral hygiene, and no risk factors (diabetes, smoking, dry mouth) can safely extend to annual check-ups. These patients maintain consistently low bacterial loads and show minimal calculus build-up.

Moderate-risk patients: every 6 months

This is the most appropriate interval for the majority of adults. It accounts for average plaque accumulation rates and catches developing cavities before they require complex treatment.

High-risk patients: every 3–4 months

Patients with active gum disease, type 1 or 2 diabetes, immune compromise, a history of frequent cavities, or who are pregnant benefit significantly from more frequent monitoring. For gum disease patients, the 3-month periodontal maintenance interval is evidence-based.

Children: every 6 months from age 1

The first dental visit should occur when the first tooth erupts, or no later than the child's first birthday. Six-monthly visits through childhood establish healthy habits, allow early intervention on developing issues, and build a positive relationship with dental care.

What happens if you skip visits

Plaque hardens into tartar (calculus) within 24–72 hours — and tartar cannot be removed by brushing. Tartar accumulation leads to gum disease, cavities, and eventually tooth loss. Many dental conditions are entirely asymptomatic until they reach a stage requiring complex treatment.

The true cost of skipping dental visits is not the appointment fee — it is the significantly higher cost (financial and physical) of treating problems that could have been intercepted early. Contact Dental Fitness to schedule your next assessment.
