Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation for being painful. The reality is quite different — the procedure eliminates the severe pain caused by an infected tooth. The key is catching it early. Here are the 10 warning signs that should prompt you to see a dentist promptly.
1. Persistent, severe toothache
A throbbing toothache that does not subside — especially one that wakes you at night — is a strong indicator of pulp infection. Over-the-counter painkillers provide temporary relief but do not address the underlying infection.
2. Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
Normal teeth can be briefly sensitive to hot or cold. When that sensitivity lingers for 30 seconds or more after the stimulus is removed, the nerve may be compromised.
3. Darkening of the tooth
A tooth that turns grey, brown, or dark yellow has often experienced internal trauma or nerve death. This discolouration occurs from within the tooth as the pulp breaks down.
4. Swelling in the gum
A raised bump on the gum near a tooth — sometimes called a dental abscess or gum boil — indicates that infection has formed. It may drain periodically, releasing foul-tasting fluid.
5. Pain when biting or chewing
If a specific tooth hurts consistently when you apply pressure, the ligament around the root may be inflamed from infection spreading beyond the tooth tip.
6. A chipped or cracked tooth
A crack or chip that extends deep enough to reach the pulp chamber allows bacteria to enter. Even painless cracks should be evaluated promptly.
7. Loose tooth
Dental infections produce acidic byproducts that soften the bone around the tooth root. If a tooth feels slightly mobile without trauma or gum disease, infection is a possible cause.
8. Pus discharge
Any pus around a tooth — especially with a bad taste in the mouth — is a clear sign of active infection requiring immediate treatment.
9. Pain that radiates to the ear, jaw, or neck
Dental pain can refer to surrounding areas. If you experience pain in your ear, jaw, or temples and your dentist cannot identify the cause, a tooth infection may be referring pain.
10. Deep decay visible on X-ray
Many infected teeth show no obvious external symptoms. This is why regular X-rays are essential — they reveal decay that has reached the nerve even before pain begins.
If you recognise any of these signs, contact Dental Fitness immediately. Modern root canal treatment is genuinely painless under local anaesthesia and typically takes a single visit.
